The ILA has been set up with the goal of establishing an infrastructure to support the growth of lacrosse in the greater Ithaca community. It will serve the interest of players, parents, coaches, officials and friends of lacrosse from youth on up. Its purpose is to teach the game of lacrosse, provide opportunities to learn and play the game under established rules and regulations, promote amateur lacrosse, and develop and encourage sportsmanship and team play among participants.
As many of you know, the Ithaca region has long been one of the top lacrosse areas of the nation. We plan to continue to build our partnership with our area schools, colleges, and community organizations. At the same time, we will seek to reach out to other surrounding communities in an effort to grow the sport regionally.
We are aided tremendously in this effort with the opening last November of The Field facility in Lansing, NY. We now have a top-notch indoor facility to play in while the snow flies. Hopefully, practice in parking lots is a ritual of the past. Our other great asset is our quality coaching staff. More players are benefiting at an earlier age from exposure to the best lacrosse minds in central New York.
The ILA is structured to keep the momentum going in perpetuity. There are Youth and Scholastic Divisions at present; as players age up, new ones enter the program. Along with new blood to serve on the board of the ILA. We also hope to add a Masters Division soon. An annual alumni game is a dream event we want to get working on right away.
We are seeking corporate sponsorship, looking into tournaments, both home and away, and we are making contacts with other Southern Tier teams. There is a lot of interest in our facility. Thanks to the Community Recreation Center we have one of the most central and desirable venues for indoor lacrosse.
To keep the ball rolling, I invite you to join us in any of the following ways:
Make sure you and/or your player are on our mail/email list with you vital statistics. We use the list to do mass (e)mailings, registrations, US Lacrosse memberships, etc.
Contact us with your interest in volunteering in any capacity, and to let us know your specific program ideas.
Make a donation to Phase 2 of The Field build-out. The unfinished space will be turned into locker/changing/shower rooms, conference and storage rooms, and other amenities as soon as sufficient funds are gathered to finish the job. There are plans to expand the concession area into the main lobby and turn that space into an inviting reception area for both ice and turf facilities.
Donate to the ILA for future programs such as clinics and tournaments.
I welcome your comments and am interested in hearing how we can improve the lacrosse experience for you and your player. Contact me via e-mail or just say hello at The Field.
